New Delhi: The Grand Mufti of India, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, the head of the global Catholic Church, remembering him as a towering figure of compassion, peace, and interfaith harmony.
In a condolence message, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad said:
“I express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Pope Francis, a global spiritual leader whose life was dedicated to the service of humanity. I was honoured to have met him in person and to share moments of dialogue and friendship during the international interfaith conferences held in Abu Dhabi in 2019 and Bahrain in 2022.”
He recalled the Pope's numerous humanitarian efforts, including his firm stances in support of refugees, oppressed minorities, and victims of war, as well as his unwavering efforts to promote religious harmony and peace across communities.
“Pope Francis maintained warm and respectful relations with the Arab world and the Muslim ummah. His voice was one of conscience in today’s troubled world. In his most recent message to the world, he appealed to all people to come forward in support of those suffering from hunger—a call that reflects his enduring compassion and care for the vulnerable,” the Grand Mufti noted.
Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad extended his condolences to the Catholic faithful and the Pope’s loved ones, praying for peace and strength for all those grieving the loss.
“His legacy of love, service, and unity will continue to inspire generations to come.”
